Suddenly Fish Pi leaves the Book of the Sea, and exits Doctor Octopuss' palace, the Vanity.
As the daulphins lead Fish Pi to the great shells, Fish Pi explains why he left the Vanity so suddenly.

Fish Pi explains. The Book of the Sea tells how there was once a kind Squid who looked after chickees. He even trained cats to help him!
The Book of the Sea tells how the Kind Squid foretold that other winged guardians would follow him --- all of them different.

Eventually there was no new winged guardian. Then an Octopus came and said that it wasn't about wings, but about being an Octopus.
Now only an Octopus could be guardian. To ensure everyone knew who was boss, he wore a hat and got cardinals to tell everyone what to do.

Bubbly is amazed to hear that the rumours are true, but she is still full of questions.
Fish Pi tells Bubbly and her friends why they have come to the place of the great shells.

Bubbly asks why Fish Pi trusts the book and not Octopuss. Fish Pi explains the sharks are theologians, leading readers to miss the truth.
Fish allow Doctor Octopuss to rule because they revere the Book of the Sea, so he cannot get rid of it. But to rule as he pleases ----

Fish Pi enters the shell chamber and begins to 'send' a message. The Book said this would draw his mate no matter how far away she was.
As he chants his mantra, Fish Pi has a vision of the ancient sea. Many things swam in it that are no more; the double ended clapper fish.
